The Ideas Foyer

By Stephen Tucker
Before you read any further into this idea you should first as yourself this question: How far am I willing to go to surprise him/her? The importance of your answer will soon become apparent. However, before you begin to fret I can tell you that there is a short cut that will make it easier – and cheaper – all round. I will explain this at the end.
The idea is a very simple one. Think. What would you least expect from someone who is anything up to 20,000 miles away from you? I imagine your answer may be much the same as mine – for them to turn up at your doorstep. This is exactly what we can try and create – the biggest surprise your partner will ever experience!
Whilst I was away on holiday once, it struck me. I don’t quite know how or why, but despite this the simple idea stuck and, as my trip went on, it grew. I pondered every which way I could get home early but, in the end settled on one unavoidable solution – I would have to leave early. Making sure that nothing or nobody else would be affected by my now early departure I called and rearranged my flight so that I would be leaving two days early. This was a costly affair but, with my wife still totally believing that I was leaving on the later, original date, I reckon it was worth every penny. On the day of my newly scheduled flight I made up a story as reason why I would not be able to get in touch with her over the next 12 hours and set off. I bought a beautiful bunch of flowers on my return and gave her the biggest surprise of her life. So how did she react? Well let’s just say that it is still one of the most favourite memories of my life.
But what’s the shortcut? Do I have to waist all that money purchasing two flights when I only need one? The answer is no. Simply tell your partner before you go that you will be arriving back two days after you actually are! Trust me, (s)he will have no idea whatsoever!
